Chapter Eighteen

It’s impossible to tell how much time passes. But eventually I find myself squinting into sunlight, a moment before Victor’s tall form cuts in front of it. The sight of him makes my heart beat double-time as I remember my ill-fated escape attempt. Is he angry? Will he punish me? Have I only made things worse for myself? I don’t know. I still have no idea who I’m dealing with here. I tense as he leans in and then holds a water bottle up to my lips.

I glare at him, but the allure of the water is too much to resist. Plus, I’m going to need my strength if I have another opportunity to escape. I open my mouth, and Victor attempts to give me some, but most of it spills down over my chin while I sputter. It’s not that easy, drinking while lying down. He sighs, grabs me by the shoulder, and holds me upright while pouring water slowly into my mouth. He lets me drink about half of the bottle before taking it away.

“I need to eat,” I say as he screws the top of the water back on. I eye him, taking in the clammy pallor of his skin and the more noticeable than usual shadows under his eyes. “And so do you.”

His brow furrows as he looks down at me. “My needs are not your concern.”

“They are when you might eat me if you get hungry enough,” I snap. It’s a low blow, but right now I’m not feeling especially sensitive to his feelings.

A muscle in his cheek twitches as he clenches his jaw. He shoves me back onto my side and slams the trunk shut without bothering to tape my mouth shut again.

I run my tongue over my chapped lips and consider my options as the car roars along the road again. I could try calling for help the next time he stops somewhere, maybe even at a stoplight if I hear a car behind us… Perhaps even maneuver myself so I can kick out a tail light to alert them.

But I don’t hear any sounds of cars on the road around us. And even if there were, I’m reluctant to drag anyone else into my escape plan when I’m not sure how dangerous Victor is. Plus, every failed escape attempt will only make him angrier and more wary. Maybe it’s best to play along for a while, be a passive captive until I see a better opportunity to escape.

The car eventually stops. Goes again. Stops again. I’m straining to listen when the trunk pops open and Victor is standing over me. He grabs my shoulder and hoists me up into a sitting position, then shoves a sandwich into my face.

“Eat,” he says.

“What is it?”

“What does it look like? A fucking sandwich.”

I hesitate. It could be drugged. The water could’ve been, too, but I was too desperate for it to care. But Victor nudges the sandwich toward my mouth, and I decide it’s not worth holding out.
